Lowellville October 20th

What was the name of the location we are putting in? Can't seem to find the last newsletter sent but I seem to remember mention of a different spot due to the construction.

Here is the information on the Lowellville to Coverts Crossing trip on the Mahoning from the October TCT Newsletter.

Fall Color Run Part 2 (may be?)
Mahoning River-Lowellville to Coverts Crossing (Edinburg PA)-Trip Leader Mike Danko
When-Sunday October 20th
Where-400 East Water Street Lowellville, OH 44436
GPS 41.035296, -80.533467
TIME 11am
Length-9 miles
1-Class I Rapid
1-Class II Rapid (Radio Rapid)
We return to our home river to paddle a section of the mighty Mahoning and this is one of the most scenic parts of the Mahoning River. Once we paddle out of Lowellville you don’t see much other than rural rolling hills and mother nature.
Due to the construction of the removal of the Lowellville dam we will be starting a little bit down river on East Water Street. This primitive launch is south of the green bridge.
Since we will be starting on East Water Street we will miss the wing dam rapid. That will leave us with one class I rapid at church hill rd. & one class II rapid (Radio Rapid).
The take out at Coverts Crossing is different this year. The official name of this launch is McKinney Russell Launch: It was dedicated as an official launch in 2018. We will no long take out under the bridge. Instead we will go past the bridge and take out on a grassy area that has been re-landscaped for easier access to the river.
Please post on website or text me if you plan on attending 330-766-3129
Mike
(Side Note- If we can't use the Lowellville launch site then I will move the launch point to the new Beyond Corporation LLC Boat Access Area on Hillsville Rd. This would make it a 6 mile Paddle)

Thanks JP! Any idea why that site may not be available? I see Mike mentions possibly using Hillsville. Do we need someone to scout it out? I could run down there one night this week

JPTolson 10-14-2019 07:02 PM

Tom,
I'm sure Mike will have it scouted.
JP

I'm planning on it. Interesting run. I think the last time I did it we had a few swimmers at Radio Rapids. Maybe we'll do better this year.

onbohio 10-16-2019 12:06 PM

Hey Mike. So is it paddle at 11 or meet at 11 then shuttle? Should we be arriving at Water street about 10 to shuttle?

fwhite 10-16-2019 03:59 PM

Where is this Radio Rapids you speak of ? I find no mention of it anywhere online. Is this a spot named by the club ? On Google Earth the only thing I see that looks like a rapid is at the Churchill Road bridge.

Radio Rapids

This is a small (class II?) rapids just south of US 224. It's a pet name from club members. Easy run down a chute in the center of the river. Usually it's just a fun slide and bumps where we like to play. Most of our swimmers here were playing around after having successfully come through it.
Looking on google maps satellite view you can just see the rocks on either side of the river. If you see North St in Edinburg, its just below it.

Downriver of US Route 224

Radio Rapids is just downriver of US Route 224. Its name comes from the club. On a Sunday club trip a number of years ago, one of the paddlers was listening to the Browns game on an unsecured transistor radio in his boat. While going through the rapids, the radio, but not the paddler:5:, fell overboard. Hence the name Radio Rapids.

So Beware!

It's now radio-active !!

Radio Rapids

This album has a number of shots of paddlers enjoying Radio Rapids during the club trip in 2016.

mfdanko99 10-16-2019 08:23 PM

Meet up at 11 or a little before, drop gear.
Then do our shuttle, after shuttle then paddle
Will have lunch at hillsville launch, it is three miles from lowellville

Thanks Mike!

Looks like the weather will cooperate.

Talked to the mayor of Lowellville yesterday. He said unfortunately the dredging may be put off till spring due to other committments for the company doing the work. He also mentioned the village is buying 12.88 acres just upstream from the dam where Grays Run meets the Mahoning. They are open to ideas for what to do with it. They are thinking some kind of a park right now I believe.

fwhite 10-18-2019 02:16 PM

I'm planning on being there, and if that radio is still active, I want one just like it !

KenM 10-19-2019 07:41 AM

K & C =yes

K & C are planning to attend. Weather looks great and the leaves are changing. KenM

My apologies.

Ken, you are a meanie. I am still traumatized by last weeks events. I almost died and worst of all my hair was a wreck the rest of the day. So Ken I just want you to know I would be glad to give you pointers on the log roll entry and if you ever need help out on the water, you should ask someone else.

suram 10-20-2019 08:46 AM

Sorry I won't be able to make this. Have fun!

Trip Review

What an amazing day on the Mahoning River. Temps in the upper 60's and partly cloudy.
Water was lowest I have ever done this section USGS at Lowellville was 2.63 ft USGS at West Ave 1.3ft
For the second straight week we had 20 paddlers make the trip (19 Kayaks & 1 Canoe)
Before we got started I got a surprise by TV 21 coming down and doing a quick story about the trip.
Once on the water we had to some portage with in the first 100 yards due to the lower than normal water levels.
After that it was fun with the lower levels as you had to read the water to pick the correct path in spots.
With the lower levels the current was great. Some of us played around at radio rapid with no swimmers.
A great day on our home river

A small group went to Melillo's afterwards to catch the news.
Mike
