Saturday April 23

If anyone is interested in a quick jaunt today on either the grand or conneaut creek, give me a call at 814-456-3636

The Grand

Save your gas Brad, the water level in the Grand is nine feet over normal levels, northern Ashtabula county received 1.4 inches of rain yesterday morning. The upper conneaut creek in PA might be navigable.

justbrad 04-25-2011 08:28 PM

Thanks Rich. I ended up going out on Pynatuming lake which was the smart choice. The wind was kicking up 1 1/2 foot waves, big enough to have fun crashing through but not so big to crash you.

On my way down to Pynatuming I did check out Conneaut creek underneath route 7. It was roaring. Given the steepness of the gorge walls, there is little room to portage around strainers and such, so it definitely would not have been safe. Hopefully the rains will subside this week, so maybe we can try again on saturday for those people that can't make the camping trip on the Clarion.

Since clarion trip is cancelled. I am up for a paddle.

West Fork of Little Beaver

Although I can't paddle this weekend April 30/May1 (at it's killing me not to be able to), I bet the West Fork of Little Beaver will be running. It would be a shame to see that water go to waste.

burrowsj 04-26-2011 10:57 AM

hmm, Thats a really good Idea.

West fork

The other group I paddle with is still scheduled to do the west fork on friday and the North fork on saturday, finishing to the ohio on sunday..... but who knows

clipper1 04-26-2011 11:34 AM

Saturday is Lakemetro Parks Grand River Canoe Race, postponed from last Saturday. Usually do it for posterity as well as the excersize. Drop me a line if you would like to participate. Bring a change of dud's as I normallly hit at least one winery after :7::7:

I am game for anything on Saturday. Got to be in Pittsburgh on Sunday to see oldest daughter get her master degree.

wardie 04-27-2011 08:11 PM

congratulations

Justbrad congratulations to you on your daughter achieving a significant accomplishment in academics! Wardie

Saturday?

I too think 70's and Sunny on Saturday dictates a paddle somewhere. West fork of Beaver Creek sounds interesting Johnathan. Surprised we haven't heard from VP Mike.

burrowsj 04-29-2011 06:00 AM

I'm game saturday for the west fork of the Little beaver. I have no idea of where to put-in. Anybody of any suggestions?

Unless brad would prefer conneaut creek. It is about 1.7ft
and the little beaver is at 5.3ft

JPTolson 04-29-2011 06:32 AM

Several possible put ins for West Fork of Little Beaver in order from upstream to downstream

1. Route 164 in Gavers. Shoulder parking. Not sure whether the land is posted as private property.

2. Stuebenville Pike Road south of Lisbon. County park board has a small lot there for parking and a small access site to the creek.

3. By the old power plant in the village of West Point.

If you paddle below West Point say down to the state park, there is supposed to be a dam after a pair of transmission lines cross the creek.

Here's a link to the Western PA canoe guide: http://www.canoedraft.shaw-weil.com/...est%20Fork.php
Guide says that 4.3 on the East Liverpool gage is a minimum level.

Watch out for strainers. It's a fairly narrow creek. You may want to check with Jerry to see if he paddled it today and what conditions are.

Have fun. Will be eager to hear what it's like.

I just talked to Jerry and they will be running it around 10:30. It's going let me know if there are any "OH SHITS".

So who's all going and what time would you like to go?

justbrad 04-29-2011 04:33 PM

I can do any time after 10:30.

mfdanko99 04-29-2011 04:47 PM

I would love to go out this weekend, but I am working saturday until Noon in Y-town.
Would love to try the west fork, or conneuat creek. Sunday is always good for me as well.

The Mahoning is up, but all the play spots are cover in the Y-town run, so it would be a quick ride, but flatt

Does anyone have a problem meeting up at 1:30 at John paul's location of route 164 in gavers. I'll post directions in a little bit. This way Mike can go too. Let me know.

So far we have Bob, Brad, Me, Mike as possible.

740-346-6323

Pull out would be at the State park which I think is 10 miles. I'm checking, but we can go further if anyone wants too.

burrowsj 04-29-2011 05:37 PM

Ok after mapping it out Gavers to the state park is around 16 miles. I think that is a little far. So, I say we go Stuebenville Pike Road south of Lisbon to the state park. Here's location of put in.

At Fredricktown we had a ball 2 out of 20 did not make it and at the Tubs one of our group tried 2 times unsuccessful , made for some great pics!
