Beaver Creek

Little Beaver Creek Cancelled
Trip Up Date-Paddle being moved to the Mahoning River

Mahoning River-Lowellville to Covert Crossing Bridge
Trip Leader-Mike Danko

When- Sunday April 25th

Where- Across the street from the Lowellville Railroad Station, 49 River Rd, Lowellville, OH 44436

GPS 41.03543933284317, -80.53667941467191

Time 11am

Distance 9 Miles

Class I & II Rapids

Due to the low water levels on Little Beaver Creek we will be moving the paddle to our home river: The Mahoning River

We will be putting in at a new location in Lowellville. We will be launching from under the Bridge and parking on River Rd. There is a small park with a nice parking area to unload at and get ready.

Once we meet up and unload all the gear at the put in we will run our shuttle to Coverts Crossing in Edinburg PA (GPS 40.996668, -80.414882)

This 9 mile section has many little riffles and some slow sections as well. The two main rapids are class I + (maybe class II at higher levels)

The first one is right near the start of the paddle; wing dam rapid. It is very easy as you follow the current into the middle of the river then follow the current to a 45-degree angle and hold your line and keep paddling.

The second is just past the 224 bridge, we call it Radio Rapid (ask Ed Ribgy why) This is a super easy rapid to get through. Line up in the middle and paddle straight through it. Very straight forward when it comes to rapids but it is a fun one to go through.

Pack a lunch as we will stop at the launch on Hillsville rd.

Please post if you are planning on attending or text me 330-766-3129 Thanks

Mike Danko

Hey Mike. Did you see trjim's post earlier about maybe joining us this Sunday? Depending on what he decides, I would also be able to have a kayak and gear available.

I definitely plan to be there, either place.

trjim 04-20-2021 08:54 PM

I did get a boat. I am attending my 1st event. Mike, I will give you a call on Wednesday or Thursday. I have a few questions, being a newbie and semi-clueless.

Awesome about getting your boat.

trip status

USGS Little Beaver Creek 3.25 ....below the 3.5 stated GO rate. Weather report shows some rain in Liverpool forecast tonight. Any thoughts on whether this trip is going to be a go on Beaver Creek or moved to Mahoning River ? When will final call be made ?

Dianne has come down with a very bad cold, so we will have to skip the paddle now. We will see everyone at the next one.

Trip Review

What started out as a dark cloudy day turned into a great day. We had temps in the low 50's and at times some clear and sunny skies. USGS at Lowellville was 2.71 ft.
We had 20 paddler & 2 k9 (17 Kayaks & 2 Canoe's)
It was a little rough at the start due to low water but we got through it. After the wing dam rapid there is a island and channel left was open and good while the right was open but had a narrow section to get through.

Once we pasted that first part it was nice easy paddling. We all made it through radio rapid with no problems except a wet lap or two.

Mark Vallecorsa tandem kayaked with his nephew Mathew. At every rapid or ripple you could hear him laugh or see a smile from ear to ear. I asked what he thought of the paddle and his response was lets go again.

Great day with great friends on the Mahoning. Thank you to all who came and to Bob Danko for helping with the shuttle.
Mike

Had a great trip. Thank your Dad for a comfortable shuttle and good conversation.

This was my first event with the club. I had a great time. Everyone was friendly and helpful, which was much appreciated since I was a newbie. I am looking forward to participating in more events. I am afraid that I have caught "kayak fever" and the only cure is more kayaking.

Ambridger 05-06-2021 01:42 PM

And more cow bell … definitely need more cow bell.
