Looks good. Any idea what time the safety class is going to be on the 16th? I just bought a kayak and that would be a good time to get it wet for the first time.

I was telling a guy at work about the safety class. He asked if they allow canoes at the pool.

TCT schedule

Was not able to make the last two meetings, but am very excited about this years schedule. After the long cold winter, that just does not want to go away, I am more than ready to hit the water. The June TCT Camping at the Overflow area in Tionesta, with scheduled floats on Saturday and Sunday with a campfire/fireside feast in between is a trip not to be missed. Thanks Mike, and am looking forward to once again hosting the Grand River trip again on 04-13-14.

Any advice on which trip would be a good one for a rookie to start with?

zzrufus1 03-21-2014 12:02 PM

What time will the trip meet/depart the B&O station? I would like to help unload boats (as I need to borrow one along with equipment).

Yes, what time is this all set to begin?
This wll be my first time on this section of the Mahoning and 1st with your club, so I'm unfamiliar with your routine, and what to expect.

Is there an established shuttle?
Any specifics we need to be aware of (Portages, ice-flow, lunch plans, recent Mahoning River Monster sightings)?
The weather is suppose to break, and we are suppose to see some sunlight and possibly a high in the 50's (WOOT! WOOT!), but thats still chilly on the water so obviously we'll need to dress appropriatly, but is there any real concern of getting wet on this section (assuming no-one accidentally ends up swimming), or is it a pretty slow dry float?

Thanks in advance for the info, see you sunday at ? o'clock,
Mike D (the other (non-Presidental) one).

I'm not sure exactly which trip he is referencing when he says the B&O trip. But if he means the one where we take passengers for a ride for Riverfest that is on Saturday June 7th. The start time for Riverfest is still undetermined.

The following day we are taking a trip from the Girard dam to the B&O. The time for that probably is not determined yet either. You could check who the trip leader is on the calendar page and maybe ask them.

If there are any ice flows on June 7th I'm packing my bags and heading south, that will be the last straw!

Well, I was referencing the trip scheduled for this Sunday (March 30th) "B&O Station to Union Street Bridge - Trip Leader: Mike Danko" and assumed zzrufus1 was as well considering it's the very next item on the calendar...

Oh, I didn't even see that one. I was thinking Grand River was the first trip of the year. Time to check the forecast.

onbohio 03-25-2014 06:33 PM

Weather channel says 53 degrees with zero chance of rain.

What time are you leaving Mike? Danko.

Riverfest- Sunday June 8

Have been patiently waiting to do a river trip with everyone. So far it has been too cold, or too advanced for us newbies. The last 2 weekends have been so nice so we have practiced on our own a few times at Mill Creek park. Will this weekend's trip be good one for us to start? Do we just come down to the B&O at 10:30 or should we get there earlier? It will be myself and my husband Scot. My 17 year old son wants to come too, but we are still working on trying to find him a kayak to borrow. Have never been to the Riverfest. If there is something we could help with, just let me know.
Thanks, Donna

onbohio 06-02-2014 04:15 PM

The trip on June 8th would be a good one for relatively new boaters. If you are available to help out with Riverfest on June 7th we could use some help. You can contact me at onbohio@gmail.com or call me at 330-307-8206.

I might have a kayak you can borrow too.

Mahoning River

Does anyone know if the Mahoning River is safe to kayak on from Foster Metro park to Rotary park? Last time we went this year in June, the water was very high and we ran into a large Strainer where we could not pass and had to stop the trip.

Also is there anywhere/anyone that rents canoes/kayaks in the valley ? We have some out of town vistors coming in and would like to take a river trip.

Thank you - Eli

On July 20, we cut a narrow passage on river right through a river-wide tangle of logs between milepost two and three when the water level on the Pricetown gage was 3.5 feet. However, there is a second river-wide blockage (it was a large single tree) about a half mile down river from the initial logjam. There MAY be a way around this tree on the extreme left, but we didn't have time to cut a clear passage. We carried around the tree on the right bank.

Water level as of Tuesday evening (8/26) at Pricetown was 4.42 feet which seems to be a pretty beefy level. Whether it is a safe level, I don't have enough experience on that stretch of the Mahoning...Anyone else????Judging from the hydrograph, it appears they are releasing from the Lake Milton dam.
