Cuyahoga River – October 7

I am posting trip arrangements for the trip leader, Pete Milliken. Please contact Pete at the phone number below or at pmilliken3@gmail.com if you have questions. JP

Sunday, Oct. 7 - Assemble at 9:30 a.m. at the Camp Hi Canoe Livery, 12274 Abbott Road, Hiram, Ohio 44234. The livery will shuttle us and our boats and gear from Camp Hi to the launch area at Russell Park, where we will start our 10-mile float down the Cuyahoga River back to Camp Hi. It's all flat water, except for a short stretch of rapids one mile upstream from the livery.
Bring your lunch and beverages. We'll make a lunch stop at a Camp Hi launch on river left just downstream from the U.S. Route 422 bridge over the river.
Please call Pete Milliken at (330) 792-0232 to make a reservation no later than Oct. 2.
TCT will pay the full cost of the shuttle.
For those not bringing their own boats, regular livery canoe and kayak rental fees will apply.
In case of rain or cold weather, this trip will be postponed to Oct. 14.

K & C can't make this one

Pete,

Regretfully we can not make the paddle on the upper Cuyahoga this Sunday. This is one of our favorite paddles. October is probably our busiest month and all the good stuff happens on the weekends of course...and especially on Sundays.

Thanks for your time and effort to arrange this trip. We appreciate how time consuming it can be.

Nice Photos!

Nice to see the photos from the trip. Looks like it was a really nice run. Wish I could have made it.

The "dangerous" Hiram Rapids!

The photos of Mike in the Hiram Rapids had Cheryl and I reminiscing about some trips on the Upper Cuyahoga.

About 25 years ago we took a canoe and paddled down from Eldon Russell Park. We were aware of the "dangerous" Hiram Rapids. As we approached the rapids we made some jokes about it. There was really just this one big rock in the middle of the river that divided the flow. No big deal...just steer around it. As it happened there was a bit more current just upstream of the rock than was obvious. The rock sucked us in and we hit it good! There was evidence on that rock of plastic and aluminum from other boats too. We still laugh about that day.

Oh, and the rock? You didn't see it! It's not there anymore. Someone, somehow managed to remove it a few years ago. We had to wonder if they got tired of their boats getting mangled up?

I am posting a review for Pete.

" Dry and unusually warm weather prevailed as 10 people in six kayaks and two canoes paddled 10 miles of the scenic Upper Cuyahoga River from Russell Park to Camp Hi on Oct. 7.

The Camp Hi canoe livery provided our shuttle, and we were on the water for about four hours, taking a lunch break near the U.S. Route 422 bridge over the river.

Most of this section of the river could be called "Lake Cuyahoga" because of its slow current. The exception is a short stretch of Class One rapids about a mile upstream from Camp Hi.

We experienced no rain despite a predicted 40 percent chance of thunderstorms."

Pete
