Lake Wilhelm Outing 6/28/15

Lake Wilhelm at Goddard State Park in Mercer County PA, Sunday, June 28, 2015.
Contact person: Steven Preston 724-813-5641 or sgbc@zoominternet.net
We will gather at the Marina boat launch between 9:30 and 10:00 AM. No shuttle will be involved so we want to depart about 10 AM. We will be going on a round trip heading north to start.
***This is a flat water paddle so it will be excellent for all skill levels including beginner and first timers so please invite them all to join us. Some kayaks and canoes are available for rent at the lake marine concession (Rental price is a bit steep).
***We will be traveling about 6 miles total. Binoculars and cameras will help. We should see bald eagles, ospreys, cormorants, great blue herons, Canada geese, and various ducks, king fishers, hawks, seagulls and crows at the least.
***Directions are easy. Take I-80 to I-79 north, Go north on I-79 two exits, Turn left on Route 358, Just across the bridge you will bare right (Brown sign for Goddard State Park), Follow this road to crossroads, Turn Right and follow to lake. Marina will be on right before crossing the causeway, Turn into marina drive and go straight all the way to the back and boat launch is back there.

***Couple of extra things of interest are:
**The Free Pioneer Frolic will be ongoing at the marina featuring Pre-1840s displays, Live music and vendor?s right around the corner from the put-in.
**Goddard State Park has (I my humble opinion) the nicest bike trail in NW PA. It is a 12 mile loop around the lower lake and runs right by the put-in. This trail is paved and has curves and hills and bridges going thru fields and woodlands. If you like to bike maybe bring it along also for a double outing.

I'll be there, and maybe the kids. I'll also mention it to a couple families we know who have expressed an interest.

I am new to this group. I do not have my own Kayak but would like to participate. It sounds interesting. Any recommendations?
Thanks,
Nancy

Nanci03,
I will be bringing a couple extra kayaks along and my canoe. Bring a PFd and we should be able to fix you up.

Are we going no matter the weather?

redntall74 06-27-2015 01:59 PM

Lets Paddle!!

The weather looks like 60 degrees and showers. Barring any thunder or lightening we are a go. Be sure to bring wet weather gear and a change just in case. Right now storms seem remote for the AM.
Looking forward to seeing all you brave souls after being cooped up all day today.
See you in the AM!!
Any questions give me a call 724-813-5641 Steven

Steve Thank you leading this paddle. I was going to come, but Ashtabula River is finally running and I can catch it at the correct level.

Have fun to all

Despite mother natures abundant liquid sunshine we had 7 brave souls on the lake and 6 boats in a very nice outing. Birdlife was plentiful except the eagles were a no show as were canoers :9:
Pioneer Frolic was happening but very wet so we supplemented with lunch at Granthams Landing. :32:
