First Official paddle of the year and Steve came up with a good one to start the year.
On this stretch of river you will need a skirt for your kayak or you will get wet. This stretch is 4.5 miles long. Most of the time this section can be done in two hours or under.
This section offer what I call the adventure section of the Mahoning river. Here is the order of rapids in this section
1-Marshall St Bridge- Class I+ or Class II
2-Wave Train by Cement plant-Class I
3-Rebar Rapid-Class II (must follow correct path to navigate this rapid)
We will tell you correct path and go first as well.
4-Wave Train after Rebar Rapid-Class I

So far the weather will be near or above 50, should be a nice quick paddle

COLD WATER PADDLE

Anytime we do a cold water paddle here are some ideas for newer paddlers

1-Never Wear Cotton
Wear , Neoprene, Wool, Fleece in layers
2-a Good Rain Suite to help keep dry if you get splashed
3- Extra set of clothes in a dry bag ( I have some extra dry bag if anyone needs to borrow.
4-A skirt is a good idea, it help keep heat in the boat and water out.
5-bilge pump
6-Throw Rope
7-Water and even small snack.
8-Gloves that are water prove
9-LIFE JACKET

If I left something please add it to the list because I am drawing a blank

Croakies or chums

Also to any new paddlers... croakies or chums are important to hold eyeglasses on in the event of a spill....

Also something to keep keys and wallet dry ON YOUR PERSON in PFD; alternately, TIED IN to the boat in a dry bag. Not that we have had any problems in the five years I've been with TCT, but valuables should not be left in a vehicle.

Mother Nature

Well the forecast is looking grim in temperature department. A high of 40 :11:

With that we can shorten the run up to a 2.8 miles and take out at center Street Bridge. This would put it at a 1hr paddle. This take is a little rougher but can be done with team work.

Something to think about when we meet up.

I'm still having trouble with my back, so I won't be there with a boat. But if it's not raining I might show up to get some pictures of you guys playing in the rapids. My case of cabin fever is just as strong as I'm sure all of yours is, so I'd like to get out for some reason.
