Freestyle Canoeing

Last weekend I had the opportunity to participate in the 2018 Midwest Canoe Symposium at Camp Butler in Peninsula, Ohio. This is an annual three-day gathering of freestyle canoeists held the weekend following Labor Day. It features a robust array of paddling classes, geared primarily, but not exclusively, toward different levels of freestyle paddling. My reason for attending was to learn the subtle techniques of moving and controlling a canoe used by freestylers. While many associate freestyle canoeing with elaborate paddling programs set to music, the skills of freestyling simply make for a better and more efficient all-round paddler. I encourage club members who paddle canoes to consider attending this event in the future or the Western PA Solo Canoe Rendezvous held each year on the first weekend in June. TCT club member Jim Satrape as well as Bruce Kemp who has encouraged TCT participation in the past, are enthusiastic members of this group of paddlers.

That is something I would love to see and learn how to be a better solo canoer.

I have a lot to learn and JP & Ron are my two masters :)

Interesting.

Interesting.

I always thought that Freestyle Canoeing was when you were swimming through the rapids behind your flipped canoe and the spectators were all yelling "Keep your feet up!" "Keep your feet up!"
