I would highly recommend joining the trip on Sunday from Niles to Girard. (posted on the forum) Very easy paddle on the Mahoning.
The friends of the Mahoning have taken over the paddle but I am sure some members will make it.
I am unable to, but I am always up to paddle if you would like to.

Any low head dams that direction?

As Ken indicated in his post, paddling south (upriver) from Foster Park will shortly bring a paddler to the Lake Milton Dam.

The Newton Falls dam is about six miles downriver from Foster Park. Portage on river left.

Thanks KenM. I think I will paddle the lake first. Never been in kayak this length and narrowness. I'll see how it maneuvers. I'll wait and paddle moving water after that, possibly with a group.
