This is a beautiful part of the Mahoning river starting in Girard. Then we pass by the vallecori steel and then past the historic area of the old Jeanette Blast furnace by the 711 connector. There is very little to show the old blast furnace was there. It was a big part of Bruce Springsteen -Youngstown Song.
We will have a MANDATORY PORTAGE around the Crescent/Division Street Dam. At the portage we can stop and take a quick little lunch break. After that it is an easy paddle to the B&O Station.

Trip Review

What an amazing day.
We had 23 paddlers (20 Kayaks & 3 Canoes) make the scenic paddle from Girard to the B&O Station.Temperature in the upper 80's and water level at 1.59 Ft at West Ave gauge.
We paddled through an urban area but you really don't realize it besides the noise of the highways. The Mahoning sits so far down and it is wall to wall trees and plants that you almost feel isolated from civilization.
We all enjoyed the two main rapids (Trestle & Woodmill) and everyone helped each other out portaging the dam where we enjoyed a nice and easy lunch break.
A big thank you goes to Stan Shiderly & Tom Smith for the great idea of using the club radio's for the shuttle. We had a long line of cars and lots of stop lights along the way. It made it so easy to keep in touch and made sure everyone was ok.
My favorite part was when Ed, JP, and myself were side by side and Ed called it a canoe wall to block the kayakers :)
Thanks to all who came.
Mike Danko
