When Akron gets hit with heavy rainfall the sewers fill up and overflow directly into the Cuyahoga. It releases a mass of nasty bacteria. Not good for the river and wildlife or paddlers.
This is an animated video about how the City plans to collect the contaminated storm water and treat it. They call it the Ohio Canal Interceptor Tunnel.
Somewhere in the past I heard that the National Park would consider putting in launch sites but they couldn't do that when bacterial counts in the river were unsafe. Maybe this project could make a difference.
