Now that all the T-grippers have had a good laugh, it is time to reveal why the paddle was being held that way. Yes, there is a good reason.
A comprehensive internet search will show that the seemingly awkward grip used in the photo is, in fact, one of the most difficult to master. It is rarely used and it is a privilege to see it performed. All good canoeists should aspire to learn this grip. It is known amongst expert canoeists as the Pressure Opposed Oar Placement grip. More commonly known by its lead letters, the P.O.O.P. grip.
Perhaps one day Mike or JP will be able canoe on the Mahoning or other bodies of water with P.O.O.P. in their grip.
