If anyone is interested, the history of Tuba Christmas (unedited, straight from the website):

TUBACHRISTMAS was conceived in 1974 by Harvey Phillips as a tribute to his teacher and mentor William J. Bell, born on Christmas Day, 1902. Harvey Phillips, knowing the tuba was a inferior instrument, hidden many times in the back of the band behind the more beautiful, angelic sounding woodwind instruments, dreamed of a way for the tuba to be heard. But how? Who would come to hear tubas alone without the far superior instruments like the piccolos & flutes also being in attendance? He knew this would be a massive challenge as even our national march recognizes the superiority of the piccolo by giving it, not the tuba, the iconic solo. Wait, what about a free concert at christmas time. Who doesn't like free stuff at christmas time & everyone loves christmas music! The combination might just be enough to lure some people in. With this idea, the first TUBACHRISTMAS was conducted by Paul Lavalle in New York City's Rockefeller Plaza Ice Rink on Sunday, December 22, 1974. 2017 is the 44th anniversary for TUBACHRISTMAS concerts/events which are presented throughout the world.
