Default Another great day on the river!!!

What a beautiful run and fun day we had on the Shenango! Fourteen paddlers in 11 kayaks and three canoes turned out for the first of the club's two fall colors runs.

The group departed from the West Middlesex boat launch shortly after noon and enjoyed a three hour float to Pulaski including a half hour stop for lunch along the way. The weather was near perfect with the air temperature in the low 70s and no wind or rain. With the Sharpsville USGS gage at 2.43 feet, we had about three to four inches of water. So despite a few shallow spots, there was minimal bumping and scraping.

Some in the group spied a bald eagle, a coyote, and an osprey. Two newbie paddlers did a great job on their first river trip. Three paddlers extended the trip to run the rapids just downstream of the take out and then walked their boats back up the short distance to the take out. The leaves were more colorful on the shuttle route than along the river, but the many shades of green and yellow foliage on the banks painted a very pretty mix on nature's river palette.

We ran the shuttle with fewer people per vehicle than normal, all with masks on and all windows open. At trip's end a number of paddlers lingered at the take out, seeming to enjoy the soft glow of the surrounding leaves and the camaraderie of fellow paddlers after such a pleasant run. They were in no hurry to rush home. It was another great day to be on the river.

Many thanks to Mike Danko for organizing and leading the trip.
