Viewing Fireworks from the Water???
I'm curious if anyone knows of places in Northeastern Ohio or Western Pennsylvania to watch fireworks from the water in canoes or kayaks. It might make for an interesting club trip in the future, depending on the river, lake, or reservoir. When I was living in DC, one paddling club that I belonged to would watch the fireworks that were set off on the National Mall from the Potomac River.

JP, you might look into launching into Lake Erie near Bay Village. There are fireworks tonight in Cahoon Park - West, which is in Huntington Beach Reservation (Cleveland Metroparks). I don't know how good the view would be? I also don't know how the park feels about boat launching, but I imagine there is a spot on the beach somewhere where the locals probably tend to go even though there is not official access point. You could launch 3.5 miles east at the Bradstreet Landing. Be sure you have the proper safety gear--whistle, lights, etc--if you go.
You can also go out to Portage Lakes on July 5, but be prepared for hundreds of boats on the water with you, most with drunk drivers. I've been out there for the fireworks on a pontoon boat a couple of times. Boats are so thick you could practically walk across the lake from one to the other without having to get your feet wet! When the show is over everyone tries to jostle for position in line to leave, much like drivers trying to exit a concert or major sporting event, only worse because they all have to go to the bathroom! I know kayakers watch from the river in Columbus and I believe they also do so in Pittsburgh. Good luck! Let us know if you find a good event to attend. |

Here's a good web page listing all the fireworks in Ohio and a description from that website of an event in the flats tonights: http://fireworksinohio.com/events/cleveland-fireworks/
Date: July 4, 2014 at Dusk Where: Shot from where Lake Erie meets the Cuyahoga River in the Flats City/State/Zip: Cleveland, Ohio 44113 County: Cuyahoga County Get directions! Event Website: Click Here! Admission: Free Event Details: Family Funfest at Settlers Landing festivities start at 6:30PM with lots of music and entertainment, including a twelve piece Sousa band, family activities, prizes and giveaways, popcorn balls, and more! Best viewing areas are from the Nautica Pavilion to Shooters and the Nautica Boardwalk on the Flats west bank, Settler?s landing on the east bank, and Whiskey Island. I've launched off the beach at Wendy Park several times, but wonder whether they would close it off for this event? Parking will be a nightmare. You could probably launch from Edgewater Park and paddle as close as they'll let you. |

There are currently events going on around the Lake Milton area to raise money for a "Fireworks Extravaganza" planned for August 24th at the lake. I don't know any other details, but will keep watch for more information. Easy access and close by, has potential.
