Mahoning River – September 23
I am posting trip arrangements for the trip leader, Mike Danko. JP
Upper Mahoning River (Rotary Park to Thomas Swift Park) Trip Leader - Mike Danko When - Sunday, September 23rd Where - 1025 1st St. Newton Falls, OH 44483 GPS 41.196854, -80.966869 Time - 11am The reports I have gotten have let me know that Foster Park to Rotary has many blockages, so I am going to move the trip down river one section. We will go from Rotary Park down to Swift Park, just over 7 miles of all flat, slower moving water. The section is passable with some areas where we will need to be single file and maneuver around down trees. There is one spot were we will slide over a log, but I might be able to remove it before the trip. The put in is down a hill that has a path to the river. If you have trouble carrying your boat, we will get it down for you. This is a great section that offers lots of different scenery and is very rural and wooded. This section is part of the State Water Trail. Hope to see you there! Mike Danko |

Trip Review
A great day on the Upper part of the Mahoning River. Total of 11 paddlers, (10 kayaks and 1 Canoe.)
I will never live this down, but after the shuttle I realized I didn't have my paddles. I left them in my truck, and it was a swift park. Ken was nice enough to run back to my truck since it was only a 10 minutes away. Once on the water it was a great paddle. That section always starts out with great current, and we all worked together and slid over the log about 200 yards from the put in. After that just some maneuvering around down trees. Lunch didn't go so well, not to many spot to have a nice lunch, and the one who tried at the first spot all got muddy. Just down river of the golf course was a nicer grassy area that allowed us to stretch. Another great day on the Mahoning! USGS Pricetown 2.5 ft at 225 CFS USGS Levittsburg 3.39 ft at 438 CFS Afterwards 9 of use meet up at Sunrise inn for dinner to tell great stories of paddles past and possible paddles in the future. Couldn't ask for a better day. Mike Danko

Mahoning River = at Newton Falls
I had intended to be on this trip, and had actually placed my kayak up onto my car, and went there. My Google map and directions were not very good, and I could not find the place - so I missed what sounded like a great trip, and once again, Mike was able to have good weather!!! I thought that someone from the trip might have seen me driving up and down S.R. 5 about ten times, looking for First Street - but no!

A few photos added
A pleasant paddle on an early fall day. Water was moving along at .7 -.8 mph so we had a little current to help us along. Mike picked a good day to do this section.
