Default Kayker Rescued 01-15-17

While we were enjoying a nice dinner two kayakers had to be rescued in Kent, OH
http://fox8.com/2017/01/15/kayakers-...-help-arrives/

They were doing the Whitewater section. Only problem is the water was way to high. They were in Rec Kayaks and life vest that didn't fit correctly.

To give you and Idea of the water level. I use the portage USGS gauge. For this section I go off of the CFS flow.
Yesterday it was at 2,450 CFS. (Very High)
The Highest I will do it is 1,300 CFS. Anything higher than that is to difficult for most.

When the club does it we go no higher than 800 CFS.
Just to give you an idea how unprepared these two kayakers where yesterday.

This why I am a supporter of knowing river levels with the USGS gauges and having correct life vest.

Default Slippery rock tooooo high

Here is a video of Kayaking on the Slippery Rock at too high a level.https://youtu.be/OBWMIHlhObI I lived in New Castle and did this section all the time. This level is asking to die. Lots of undercut rocks, fallen trees and no eddies at this level. I would never do this in a white water Kayak over 2.5 on the McConnell mill gauge. Look at the level they are doing it. They are good but rolling the dice.
