Dust/Sunset Paddle
On Saturday the 22nd we will do our first Sunset Paddle on the Mahoning River. This section is part of the State Water Trail from Rotary Park to Thomas Swift Park.
We will meet at Rotary Park in Newton Falls -1025 First St Newton Falls, OH 44444 at 6pm. Unload all gear and then do the shuttle to Thomas Swift Park 870 Benedict-Levittsburg Rd Levittsburg, OH 44430 (GPS 41.238975 We have a detour for our shuttle. Rt 5 is closed just south of the turnpike. If you come off the turn pike you will have to go RT 5 north and make left on to St RT 82 and follow detour signs to St RT 534. Make left on to 534 and follow to St RT 5. Make left at St Rt 5 light off of 534 and go about a mile or so until you see a big brown sign that has Newton Falls on it with the Zip code 4444 on it. That is First St. Make a right and head to the put in. I will try to make a map for all drivers when we do our shuttle to make things as easy as possible. Then Hit the water and watch the sun go down as we paddle in to the dark. Please bring head lamps and lights in case it does get to dark to see near the end. Take a snack as we might stop to take a break. Mike Danko |

No, it shouldn't be that dark yet to need to light up the boat, unless we really take a long time, and i don't see that happening.
Sunset is around 9:30, we should be pulling out around that time. Mike |

Last night I did a pretrip paddle to make sure the trail is clear. I put in at 6:30pm and got out at 9:15pm. I did have to do some cutting on new trees that must of fell in the last storm. It is 100% passable, but there are some area were it is a tighter fit and will have to pass threw one by one.
I think everyone will like this trip as the sun goes down Mike Danko |

Thanks Mike for a great evening!! Perfect weather and Patty and I had really enjoyed meeting some other members finally. We are looking forward to be joining in on some other paddles this summer.

Yes, thanks to Mike for leading a very pleasant trip (and for scouting it earlier in the week) from Rotary Park to Swift Park. Evening temperatures and lots of birds (kingfishers, kingbirds, thrushes, and veeries to mention a few) along the way made it a pleasure to be on the water. I'd be in favor of more sunset runs during the summer to escape the heat of mid-day.

Thank you to Lou, & Patty Champ, JP Tolson, Ron Ellis, Jason Mulloy for coming out for a nice paddle down the Mahoning River. It was a very senic trip that was pleasant due to the sunsetting and the cooler temputures than what we had earlier in the day.
Saw many types of water fowl, and two fisherman as well. Near the end of the paddle we go to see a type of hang glider that is strapped to the guy back fly over head. I really hope in the future to have another evening paddle. Thanks again for all who came out, and for the ones who missed the trip hope to see you soon. Mike Danko ps will post pictures in a couple of days |
