Lightbulb Oct 1st

I realize we have a run scheduled the second of October down the mahoning.
I want to see if we want to do both or cancel the Mahoning and just do the Shenango run with the river watchers

This is the email I have received from the River Watchers.

Dear Trumbull County Canoers,
Our nearby organization, the Shenango River Watchers (shenangoriverwatchers.org), are planning a big day on the river for October 1. We call it "PaddleFest 2011." The purpose is to celebrate and announce the re opening of the channel of the upper Shenango River to canoes and kayaks. As we "speak," a team of men and horses are hard at work clearing obstructions from the river from the dam in Pymatuning State Park, down to Riverside Park in Greenville (we'll do the balance of the river, down to Shenango Res., next year). That is a distance of about 8-9 miles. All Class 1 flat water, some riffles. And, no obstructions or portages!

Date: Saturday, October 1.

A free shuttle from Riverside Park/Greenville to the put-in at the dam from 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. (drop your canoe at the launch below the dam, then
drive to Greenville, leave your car there and take our shuttle back to the dam)

All canoes/kayaks on the water from 10:00 a.m. to about 10:30 a.m.

Free hot dog/soft drink lunch from noon till about 1:30 p.m.

Clean flush toilets/washrooms at both ends of the float.

Would you be kind enough to let me know if you are interested in taking part on this day? Either individually or as an organization? Email me, or call me directly at 724 927 9483.

Very truly yours,

Hugh Clark

So lets talk about what we want to do as a club.
I am ok with doing both runs, but would really like a good turn out for the run on the shenango.

Mike,
The club did this section of the river years ago and it is one of the best small rivers in our area. I vote we go on this trip and meet some other paddlers and see this beautiful river !

Default Free

Free food. Free shuttle. flush pottys. Does YOUR run have that Mike?
The club has never went from the dam in the State Park that I know of, in fact from the accounts I have read the last few years, a few have tried, but said it was very clogged. It would be interesting to see how they did it and how many man-hours were involved. I say change the run to this one.
Does anyone in the club have a team of horses??

Sounds like a nice trip & it would be good to support their efforts. If I'm not paddling whitewater that weekend I'll probably go.

Thumbs up PaddleFest aftermath...

Guys (and gals),
Thanks for joining us...too bad the weather was such drag...we lost at least 50 paddlers from calls I got. But "when the going gets tough, the tough get going!" Paddlers are a hardy lot.

FYI, at one count, before people launched, we had over 120 kayaks/canoes on the bank...served 181 hot dogs...had 3 spills (all canoes)...had one guy from upstate NY, a group from Harrisburg, one fellow from Cleveland, lots of Buckeyes (my wife, cooking hot dogs, is an OSU grad)...great turnout, all things considered.

We're planning to do it again next year, starting from Riverside Park down to Big Bend (after we clean-up that section). Needless to say, we'd love for you to be there in big numbers.
