Thumbs up Little Beaver Creek

Little Beaver Creek- Trip Leader Mike Danko
When- Sunday April 17th

Where- 12905 Sprucevale Rd, East Liverpool, OH 43920
(Beaver Creek State Park Primitive Campgrounds)
Sprucevale Rd also goes by County Rd 428

GPS 40.70586, -80.580351

Time- 10:30 am

Beaver Creek is my one of my favorite trip of the year; it's why I like to lead it. I grew up paddling this section.
We will paddle from Sprucvale to the Lock 57 Community Launch in Ohioville PA.
This section is about 12 miles, but with the current it isn?t a hard 12; it is a fun 12 miles.
Beaver Creek is known for its many class I riffles and two class II rapids as well as the scenic views.Right after the St Rt 170 Bridge is the first class II rapid. The second is after Grimm?s bridge.
I advise everyone to bring a spray skirt to help stay dry and pack a lunch as we will stop near the middle to relax and stretch.

Cool

Water Levels- I will be keeping a very close eye on water levels for this trip.

Our paddle zero (minimal) level is 3ft at USGS Grimms Bridge.

The highest I will float it as an official club trip is 6 ft at USGS.

above that I would officially cancel but do it as a side trip for experienced paddlers who like whitewater.

As of 4-12 it is 7.46ft.

Forecast looks great for rest of week with no rain and I believe we will be a great level for sunday.

I will post more as the week goes by

At the beginning of the week I was worried of to much water, Know I am worried for enough water.

Friday at 6pm USGS is 4.68 ft

I sure hope it says above 3ft

Many thanks to Mike Danko for leading the annual club trip down Little Beaver Creek on a gorgeous day. We had 15 paddlers in 14 boats, four canoes and the rest kayaks, and only one carnage episode, though not at any of the three major rapids. Level was around 4.25, a decent low-medium level. Someone had cut out the strainer that had been across the creek about a mile below the put-in for the past couple years. It was another great day to be on the river!

Default Trip Report

What a picture perfect day on Little Beaver Creek. Like John Paul mention it was nice not to portage the log just down from the put in. With the higher water level than past trips Fredericktown rapids were easier with no one going for a swim.
We had a smaller group than I though would show, but we found out the new radios will come in hand.
Ed was near the front and I was in the back and we were able to let each know when we needed to hold up and make sure everyone was ok. It also nice that Stan has is own radio and uses it with our two.
I see them becoming a very important role for future trip.

We also got to see and immature bald eagle, with all the natural beauty of this creek.

At the lunch stop after Grimms Bridge we ran into a pack of paddlers that were coming from Darlington Pa down to the Ohio River. It was nice to talk to them and see another group out on a perfect day.
Thank to all who paddled this trip as it was nice to catch with some members and see many old friend.
Afterward a small group stopped at the Steel Trolley for a good dinner.

Paddlers-John Paul, Ron, Chuck Miller, Ed Hahn, Ed Rigby, Mary K, Steve, Chuck, Bruce & Diane, Stan, Bob Danko, Jessica, Wayne and myself.
Will Post pictures.

Thanks for another great paddle down the Beaver Creek, Mike! A special thanks goes to Ed Hahn for "goading" me into paddling hard into and then OVER a log . . . oddly something I've not done before. Beautiful day with the wonderful Trumbull Canoe Trails' paddlers!!
