I would like to thank JP for organizing this excellent paddle. There was lots of traffic on the river: rental kayaks, tubers, a survey team (KSU?), and some swimmers. I really enjoyed my maiden paddle on the beautiful clear waters of the Cuyahoga.

Default Trip Report

The club had a beautiful late summer day for the run from River Bend Boulevard to Water Works Park on the Cuyahoga River. Twelve paddlers in 11 kayaks and one canoe enjoyed what may have been the last shorts and tee-shirts trip of the paddling season. This was the first time on the Cuyahoga for seven paddlers. The water level was low (around 145 cfs on the Old Portage gage and around 100 cfs on the new gage up river of River Bend Boulevard and below Lake Rockwell), but we still had a great time.

Five of us met at River Bend to run the whitewater section. As expected, the river was a little bony in a few places, but that gave everyone a chance to work on river reading skills. And at the lower level, there was no concern for getting swept into the island below the old dam.

We arrived close to the 11:30 meeting time at Tannery Park to greet seven other paddlers who were waiting to join the trip for the 6.5 mile run to Water Works Park. Those from River Bend played in the river at Tannery while the second group of paddlers ran the shuttle. (Note for future reference: At the Tannery put in there is a run out from the last rapid above Tannery that would be very good for new paddlers to practice ferrying and peel outs.)

After what must have seemed like an eternity to run the shuttle and have lunch, we were back on the water at about 12:45. We encountered quite a few rental kayaks and tubers downriver of the Middlebury Road and Brust Park access points. At the rock garden rapids at Brust Park, a small group on non-paddlers was conducting some type of survey. At the bottom of the rapid, the group had extended a rope across the river about head high for someone in a canoe. (Did a bunch of kayakers put them up to this? LOL!) One individual in the survey crew was standing in the rapid facing downriver, close to the cleanest line through it. There was some concern that a boat could strike the person standing in the rapid, and one or two came close. We were puzzled why this work would be conducted during the weekend on such a heavily traveled stretch of river.

The remaining hour of the trip was pleasant and uneventful. The forest canopy, filtered sunlight, and twists and turns in the river below Route 91 create an interesting, serene, and beautiful atmosphere. We were off the water by 4:00, and it had been another great day on the river!

Thanks to all who came out for this trip: Mary Kane and her friend, Karen Kozbial, Mike Newberry and Ralph Woods from Sharon, PA, Jim Keenan, Troy Rhoades, Brenda Walko, Mark and Jodi Vallecorsa, and Simon and Kerry DiDomenico, all the way up from Wintersville, OH. It was great to see and paddle with everyone.

JP
