Default Tuba Christmas

At the Stambaugh Auditorium in Youngstown, at 2 p.m. on Sunday December 3rd 2017 the annual Tuba Christmas presentation will occur. I bring this to everyone's attention because our lovely and talented president, Mike Danko, will be performing as part of this musical spectacular.

I will also be at tuba Christmas playing my Baritone with other members from the Cortland Community Band.
About 75 to 100 Tuba's and Baritones make this event.

This is the reason why the Chilly Chili Paddle is on the 10th of Dec

If anyone is interested, the history of Tuba Christmas (unedited, straight from the website):

TUBACHRISTMAS was conceived in 1974 by Harvey Phillips as a tribute to his teacher and mentor William J. Bell, born on Christmas Day, 1902. Harvey Phillips, knowing the tuba was a inferior instrument, hidden many times in the back of the band behind the more beautiful, angelic sounding woodwind instruments, dreamed of a way for the tuba to be heard. But how? Who would come to hear tubas alone without the far superior instruments like the piccolos & flutes also being in attendance? He knew this would be a massive challenge as even our national march recognizes the superiority of the piccolo by giving it, not the tuba, the iconic solo. Wait, what about a free concert at christmas time. Who doesn't like free stuff at christmas time & everyone loves christmas music! The combination might just be enough to lure some people in. With this idea, the first TUBACHRISTMAS was conducted by Paul Lavalle in New York City's Rockefeller Plaza Ice Rink on Sunday, December 22, 1974. 2017 is the 44th anniversary for TUBACHRISTMAS concerts/events which are presented throughout the world.

2017 is the 44th anniversary for TUBACHRISTMAS concerts/events which are presented throughout the world. TUBACHRISTMAS was conceived in 1974 by Harvey Phillips as a tribute to his teacher and mentor William J. Bell, born on Christmas Day, 1902. Through the legendary William J. Bell we reflect on our heritage and honor all great artists/teachers whose legacy has given us high performance standards, well structured pedagogy, professional integrity, personal values and a camaraderie envied by all other instrumentalists. The first*TUBACHRISTMAS was conducted by Paul Lavalle in New York City's Rockefeller Plaza Ice Rink on Sunday, December 22, 1974. Traditional Christmas music performed at the first TUBACHRISTMAS was arranged by American composer Alec Wilder who ironically died on Christmas Eve, 1980. Wilder composed many solo and ensemble compositions for tuba and euphonium. He was a loyal supporter of every effort to improve the literature and public image of our chosen instruments. Through Alec Wilder we express our respect and gratitude to all composers who continue to embrace our instruments with their compositions and contribute to the ever growing solo and ensemble repertoire for tuba and euphonium.

for give my girlfriend who is jealous of the low brass section of a band. She only wished flutes and piccolo's were liked as much as low brass. Just remember low brass kicks *ss

LOL

Dozens of area musicians perform in annual tuba holiday event

Article from Last year

Staff report
YOUNGSTOWN
An estimated 120 tuba and baritone horn players of virtually all ages performed in the 18th annual TubaChristmas in the Valley concert Sunday at Stambaugh Auditorium.
Sunday also was the 43rd anniversary for TUBA-CHRISTMAS concerts/events presented throughout the world.
TUBACHRISTMAS, after which TubaChristmas in the Valley is patterned, was conceived in 1974 by Harvey Phillips as a tribute to his teacher and mentor, William J. Bell, born Christmas Day 1902.
Mike Danko, who plays baritone in the Cortland Community Band, participated with three other members of the community band.
“As long as you play a euphonium or baritone, a tuba or a sousaphone, which is a marching tuba, you can participate,” said Danko, who performed in his sixth TubaChristmas on Sunday.
“It’s fun. I just love to play,” said Danko, who used to play trumpet.
He said the players ranged in age from 13 to 88, and one young woman from the Netherlands, who was visiting in the area and heard about the concert, borrowed a tuba and played.
Danko said Hubbard brought the most players, with 16, but that there were participants from numerous high schools and community bands, and Youngstown State University instrumentalists and high-school and college educators.
The collection of players performed traditional Christmas music, from carols to “Jingle Bells.”
“A lot of people don’t realize that baritones and tubas can carry the melody,” he said.
“What’s neat is you get to see all different styles of horns. It’s so cool to see,” Danko said.
Wes O’Connor, band director of Austintown Fitch High School, was conductor of TubaChristmas, and its coordinator was Teresa Kirkland.
The first TUBA-CHRISTMAS was conducted by Paul Lavalle in New York City’s Rockefeller Plaza Ice Rink on Dec. 22, 1974. Traditional Christmas music performed at the first TUBACHRISTMAS was arranged by American composer Alec Wilder, who composed many solo and ensemble compositions for tuba and euphonium.
