Default Safety Session

Steve Lukco is unable to attend this event. We will still be using the pool. There will be a Custodian there to check in on us. We will have to pay the Custodian fee of 45.

I will cover it up front and hopefully get a vote to get reimbursed

Basic Canoeing & Kayaking Safety Session.
When- Sunday March 12th

Where-Warren G Harding High School Swimming Pool 860 Elm Road, NE Warren, OH 44483

GPS 41.244004, -80.805962

Time-10am - 1pm
For this event we will ask members to try to keep kayak 14ft in length or under do to maneuverability and safety of others.
If we have any members bring there canoe I would ask for the Canoes to only be in the water at the same time with no Kayaks in the water incase the canoes want to practice flipping and canoe over canoe rescue.
This event is geared to all new members and other member to brush up on skills or pass on tips to newer paddlers.
The purpose of the event covers the VERY BASICS of kayaking.

Topics Covered

Cold Water Safety Gear- We live in Northeast Ohio and Western PA, we are use to cold temperatures; but what should I wear for a paddle in the cold???

Life Vest- Does your vest fit properly? Can it hold you up in water with out swimming? Importance of wearing a vest in case you do flip.

Entering & Exiting a Kayak- Sounds simple, but most accidents and injuries do happen at these two points.

Kayak over Kayak / Canoe over Canoe Rescue- For members who enjoy a nice easy paddle on a lake or a slow wide moving river this one is for you. What to do if you flip in open water and going to shore isn't a option.

If time allows it we can go over a basic forward stroke, reverse stroke and some turning strokes specially for newer paddlers.

WE ARE VERY LUCKY TO HAVE AN OPPORTUNITY TO USE WARREN HARDING SWIMMING POOL-PLEASE WASH ALL BOATS!!!

Default Questions

Do we have access to a locker room or dressing area?

(Might be a bit cool out in the car)

Default Safety Review

It was another great day to be inside and using a nice warm pool.
16 total members showed up, and I was very pleased to see a lot of are newer members.
We spent time going over basic gear for cold weather and what to keep on your boat.
We Also cover basic life vest and seen if they fit properly.
It was fun to go over the basics of entering and exit your boat and getting to have everyone flip there boats.
Over all it was a great session.
Thanks needs to go to Steve Preston, Stan S, Ron Ells, & JP. With there help we were able to do a lot of one on one training.
It was neat to see Ken and Cheryl go over the rope and foot loop safety concept.

Thanks to all you showed up.

Mike

Default Thanks to Mike!

Many thanks to Mike for organizing and conducting the safety session. No matter how long one has been boating, a session like this is a good refresher and reminder, a chance to practice, and an opportunity to learn new things from fellow paddlers.
