Default Tionesta Creek

UPDATE 5/29 Sticking with Tionesta Creek. See you all at Kelletville.

UPDATE UPDATE 5/28. THE GAUGE AT TIONESTA IS STILL AT 2 FT. CHECK BACK FORST THING IN THE MORNING FOR UPDATE. IT MAY DROP MORE OVER NIGHT

UPDATE 5/27: I will post tomorrow PM if Tionesta Creek or Allegheny River. I'm watching the weather up there and the river gauge.

Tionesta Creek
Trip Leader Mark Vallecorsa
When - Sunday May 29th
Where - Cougar Bob's Tavern 13685 Route 666, Tionesta, PA 16353
Time - 10:30 AM
Distance - 11 miles
Class I Rapids

We will drop boats at Kellettville, then commence our shuttle down to Nebraska. Cougar Bob’s Tavern sits at the Kellettville bridge (where we will launch) and you can use their address for way-finding … 13685 Route 666, Tionesta, PA 16353. The float down to Nebraska should be class I and will take us through the Allegheny National Forest. Be sure to pack a lunch, drinking water, and sunscreen.

In the event of low water, the back-up plan will be to float the Allegheny from West Hickory (launch at the end of the bridge – where 127 & 62 meet) down to Tionesta (take-out TBD … either at the launch across from the fish culture station or on Lighthouse Island). Meeting time will remain the same, and we will meet first to drop boats at West Hickory.

This should be a fun filled Memorial Day weekend, as the next day, Dustin is running a trip on the Clarion.

If you have questions about the Tionesta Creek / Allegheny River trip, feel free to call (724-601-9801) or text … I’m bad about checking voice mail and e-mail … I do see Facebook messages, but only at home (I’m still rockin’ a dumb phone).

I always wanted to do the lower part of the Tionesta. Looks like they had some rain as the gage is on the way up. Hope it doesn't drop too fast.

Unfortunately this is a 3 hour drive for us so not a day trip. We will miss this trip and the Clarion.

2 hour 10 minute drive for me. I am planning to attend. A 2 hour drive is about my limit for a one day paddle.

Looking forward to seeing you there. I heard from Judy & Jeff last night; they may be joining us as well. I will post later tonight as to whether we are going to do Tionesta or Allegheny. I'm watching the gauge and weather reports.

Looks like we're in for a one-day only so as not to overdo things. Clarion won the coin toss. The beautiful Tionesta will have to wait until another time, but at least we'll get a chance to see our friends yet again.

The trip on Tionesta Creek went better than expected, and I say that because of the water level being slightly low. There had been some rain in the days leading into the trip, however the level was trending down, and when we launched it was around 1.85 on the Lynch gauge. I think we only had some minor scraping, maybe one or two brief walks in the water... not enough to be annoying thankfully. In attendance were Tom & Darla, Jim, Jodi & myself, and my sister-in-law and two nephews. This was the first time for my youngest nephew to solo on moving water, and while he did well, and really enjoyed the few spots with some riffles, his pace was slowing about 3/4 of the way through this 11 mile paddle. We reconfigured, putting him into the front of my tandem, and eventually we all reached Nebraska. The last mile or so has very little current, as you are entering the backwaters of the lake. We were graced with an eagle fly-over, and the peaceful seclusion of the ANF. The campground (USACE) at Kellettville had not yet opened for the season, but I heard that June 1st might be opening day there. There were alot of kayaks on the creek, and when I got Jim back to his car at the end, there was quite a flotilla coming down from above Kellettville. The weather was great, we had one minor carnage, and I must say that I appreciated everyone's patience with my nephews. Sunday on the Clarion with the Noels was even better, but I'll let him tell ya about that. Any day I can get my nephews into the great outdoors is a win, and this entire weekend was just that. See yinz all at the next one.
