Default Meeting Minutes December 1, 2013

Trumbull Canoe Trails
Meeting Minutes
Sunday, December 1, 2013

FINAL

Call to Order

President Mike Danko called the third meeting of 2013 to order at 3:15 p.m. on December 1, 2013, with 15 members and guests present.

Secretary’s Minutes

Club secretary, John Paul Tolson, read minutes from the previous club meeting on February 17, 2013. The members present voted to approve the minutes as read.

Treasurer’s Report

Club Treasurer, Patty Allen, was not present so there was no treasurer’s report.

Old Business

Donations for Improved Access
At its February 17, 2013, meeting, the club voted to earmark $250 for a donation to the Friends of the Mahoning River for an access ramp at B&O Station. However, the City of Youngstown Park Board, owner of the property, has since indicated that it is not in favor of building such a ramp. Consequently, it makes no sense for the club to donate funds for a ramp at that location. Ed Rigby moved to rescind the earmark of $250 to the Friends of the Mahoning; Mike Danko seconded the motion. Members present voted in favor of the motion.

Also at the February 17, 2013, meeting, the club voted to donate $250 to Trumbull County MetroParks for a boat ramp at Swift Park. MetroParks is now accepting contributions for this work to complement a recent grant it received. Mike Danko will ask club treasurer, Patty Allen, to write the check for the club’s donation.

New Business

1. Ramp and Trail Work in Trumbull County MetroParks
Trumbull County MetroParks has received a $75,000 grant from the Ohio Department of Natural Resources to construct boat ramps at Foster, Swift and Canoe City parks on the Mahoning River and for trail work at Canoe City. The new ramp at Canoe City will be down river of the Leavittsburg Dam. In applying for the grant, Zack Svette of Trumbull County MetroParks and a member of TCT made significant use of the club website to document and demonstrate that the Mahoning River is being used increasingly for public recreation.

2. Mahoning River at Lowellville
Mike Danko announced that the debris-collecting trestle on the Mahoning, downriver of Lowellville, was removed last summer and that dredging has already begun upriver of the Lowellville Dam. Work to remove the dam is scheduled to begin in May 2014.

3. Bowling Green State University
Mike Danko announced that he remains in touch with the outdoor recreation group at BGSU and they continue to express interest in paddling Beaver Creek with the club at levels below seven feet.

4. Announcements

•The Procrastinators Christmas Party is scheduled for Sunday, January 19, 2014, at the Ice House in Youngstown.

•Candidates for club officers will be announced at the Procrastinators Christmas Party; elections will be at the trip-planning meeting in February. Mike Danko has expressed interest to serve another two-year term as president.

•Ron Eels is planning to paddle across Maine next summer and is looking for people who are interested in accompanying him.

Adjournment

At approximately 3:35 p.m. Ed Rigby moved that the meeting be adjourned. Ron Eels seconded the motion and members present approved the motion.

Minutes prepared by club secretary, John Paul Tolson, on December 7, 2013.
