Deer Creek, PA
With the high water last weekend I made the trip over to Deer Creek, near Clarion, for some nice class II whitewater.
I've been trying to nail down some data on this creek, as it is one of my favorite class II runs in the region. So far I'm looking at using the USGS Oil Creek gauge as an indicator, looking for a spike to about 5' for Deer Creek to come up to a good level. If you use the Western PA Whitewater Watershed map, look for at least 2" of rain in an already wet watershed to bring it up. At the put in there is the remains of the old bridge, with a easily visible old iron plate sticking out over the creek. If the water is within 3 inches of the iron (below the iron) then the water level is good for a medium flow. Over the plate and it gets pushier, with some waves washed out. There is a pic of this 'gauge' on the TCT facebook page now. I put together a vid of the run showing the major rapids. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kljxdHrBPEI Steve Z Last edited by swampboy62; 06-30-2015 at 03:02 PM. |

Great video! And a pleasure to watch without Michigan fight songs playing in the background, as in some of Mike D's videos.

Sounds good to me Mike.
With all the rain this year I've been able to get the boat out quite a bit more. I've got in a couple of nice East Sandy Creek runs, one each on Scrubgrass and Bear Creeks, and three Deer Creek runs. All of these are relatively easy class II runs in the Allegheny Gorge area of PA, since I'm no longer willing to put my rusty skills up to anything harder. I'll try to remember to post up if I head out again, but often these trips are pretty much spur of the moment things. Steve |
