Mahoning River Water Trail 5-26

Mahoning River-May 26th ? Trip Leader Mike, ED, Zack

On this day we will be working with Trumbull Metro Parks on finishing the Mahoning Water Trail.

From Foster Park to Rotary Park needs the Mile marker signs installed and any logs cut or removed to open up the water way. This section is 6 miles long.

The Other section is from Canoe City to Packard Park needs Mile marker signs installed. This section is open and an easy paddle.

If we can get enough members to show it would be nice to split into two groups and both groups have a GPS device to know when to install the Mile Markers. By have two groups it can make the day a little faster and easier. If not we will try to get both sections done in one day.

Meet at Foster Park at 9am and see how many show up and do our shuttle and get started.

Foster Park 3940 Damascus-Newton Falls Road, Newton Falls, Ohio 44444
Damascus-Newton Falls rd is also known as NE River RD.
GPS-41 degrees 8 minutes 8 seconds north latitude and 80 degrees 57 minutes 59 seconds west longitude

Well on this pretty day 10 brave souls showed up to help the metro parks.
eight members, 1 guest and Zack from the metro park,
Steve & Lynda were in command canoe 1
Mike Danko & Sack Szvette in metro park one canoe.
Ron ellis was a canoe battle ship.
Jason Mulloy, Jessica, Bob Danko, Brian, Jerry Lyda manned the kayaks.

We got all mile marker put up. Got a lot of logs cut and have a path in certain places were it will be tight, but passable. A BIG thank you to Chain Saw STEVE for bailing us out of trouble.

My sons Boy Scout troop is going to be canoeing the Mahoning River from Newton Falls down to Canoe City in a couple of weekends.

Any word if that big blockage near the soccer fields on route 82 is still there?

That jam by the soccer fields is passable. I cleaned it out this spring.

The only one were you will have to really watch is between Mike Marker 2 & 3. There is a narrow path threw a huge jam. That we were able to make. Besides that there should be nice paddleing that will test there ability to steer a canoe around fallen tree's and threw paths that are there.

Many thanks on behalf of the Troop 101 Scouts - that blockage was the only real hitch in this canoe trip last year. Much appreciation for your work.

Thought I'd post up that the Boy Scouts had a great trip on the river last weekend (15th & 16th). They paddled from Rotary Park down to Canoe City, with an overnight stop at the mouth of Eagle Creek courtesy of the Conservation Club there. Having the blockages gone at the golf course and especially near the route 82 soccer fields made the trip much more enjoyable this year, as did Swift Park as their lunch stop. They expressed their appreciation for the work done by TCT.

They did report a river wide blockage between steep banks above the turnpike. The log was just above water level, so they were able to stand on it and pull the boats over, and it wasn't a huge hindrance to their trip.
