Default Cuyahoga River – September 19

Cuyahoga River – Tannery Park in Kent to Water Works Park in Cuyahoga Falls with a whitewater option*** upstream of Tannery Park

Trip Leader – John Paul Tolson
Date – Sunday, September 19th
Where – Tannery Park, 300 Stow St, Kent, OH 44240; GPS 41.1502°, -81.3631°
Time – 11:30 AM

On Sunday, September 19, we will paddle the Cuyahoga River from Tannery Park, 300 Stow Street (41.1502°, -81.3631°) in Kent to Water Works Park, 2025 Munroe Falls Avenue (41.1445°, -81.453°) in Cuyahoga Falls. This is a 6.5 mile trip that will take about three hours. It is nearly all flatwater, except for two short class 1 rapids. After a scouting run a couple weeks ago, there does not appear to be a good spot to pull off the river for lunch until Brust Park, about two hours from the put in. So we may have to eat lunch at Tannery Park after running the shuttle or on the water.

We will meet at Tannery Park at 11:30 a.m. Parking here is limited to about 35 vehicles and the park gets significant use. So it wouldn’t be a bad idea to arrive a little early to get a parking spot. There is a small parking lot for about six or seven vehicles across the street. Once boats are unloaded, we will shuttle to the take out. There is a port-a-john at Tannery Park and restrooms at Water Works. NOTE: The parking lot at Tannery is not trailer-friendly. There is a pull-off area a hundred yards or so up the hill along Stow Street that could be used temporarily to park a couple vehicles with trailers.

***As we have done for this trip previously, those who wish to paddle the whitewater section upstream of Tannery Park through downtown Kent will meet at 10:00 a.m. at the river access site on River Bend Boulevard (41.168789, -81.348057), about one-quarter mile east of Ohio Route 43. The group putting in here will also shuttle to Water Works Park and then paddle down to Tannery Park to meet those who want to begin the trip at Tannery. It is about 1.5 river miles from River Bend to Tannery. NOTE: The parking lot at River Bend is also not trailer-friendly. Anyone bringing a trailer may have to park along the street.

At lower water levels, this upper section through downtown Kent has about a mile of class 1-2 rapids. Paddlers who want to run this section should have good boat control in a moderate current. At higher levels, the rapids turn to class 2-3. We will NOT run this 1.5 mile section if the flow exceeds 750 cfs on the Old Portage U.S. Geological Survey gage. Meet instead at the Tannery Park put-in at 11:30. Watch the club website if there is any question whether we will run this section and for any other updates for the trip.

Please call or text JP Tolson at 234-575-3650 or post here by Saturday, September 18, if you plan to attend. Hope to see you on the river! PLEASE WEAR A MASK FOR THE 20 MINUTE SHUTTLE RIDE BACK TO THE PUT IN. THANKS.

Below are the water level guidelines for the trip.

River Bend to Tannery Park – If the reading on the Old Portage gage is greater than 750 cfs or would likely be greater than 750 cfs by the time we would put on the water, this section of the trip is cancelled. Levels below 200 cfs may be a bit bony. I have paddled this section as low as 132 cfs.

Tannery Park to Waterworks Park – If the reading on the Old Portage gage is greater than 1,000 cfs or would likely exceed 1,000 cfs by the time we would put on the water, this section of the trip is also cancelled. At this level, the current picks up significant speed and negotiating some of the bends in the river could be tricky for some. Since safety is always first, we don't want to find ourselves chasing down folks who might be taking long swims in a fast current.

Default Video of Whitewater Section

For anyone who is curious, here are two videos produced by Bruce Ambrose of the whitewater section from River Bend Boulevard to Tannery Park. These are from a scouting run on September 6th. The flow was 321 cfs on the Old Portage gage. This was a nice, mellow level, not too pushy and not bony. At levels below 200 cfs, we may experience some bumping and scraping.

Default Looks like a low water run

Thanks to those so far who have indicated they will be paddling the Cuyahoga on Sunday. It's very likely going to be a low water run unless we get a flash rain storm. But we'll make the best of it and have a great time. There likely will be a iittle scraping and bottom bumping between River Bend and Tannery Park. Below Tannery we may have to step out of our boats briefly in the rock garden at Brust Park.

For those who are meeting the trip at Tannery Park, please be patient if those starting the trip upriver at River Bend do not arrive at Tannery exactly at 11:30. Because of the lower water, it could take a bit longer than usual to make it from River Bend to Tannery. And, there is a chance that we may need to use an alternate (and longer) shuttle route due to a possible road closure at the railroad tracks on State Route 91. That could delay us getting on the water.

Thanks for your understanding and I look forward to seeing everyone on Sunday.

Default Shuttle from Tannery

Those meeting the trip at Tannery Park should unload their boats and gear when they arrive so that we will be ready to run the shuttle when the paddlers from upstream arrive at Tannery. I will ride with the lead car and provide directions to Water Works Park.

See everyone in the morning. It's going to be a great day on the river!
