Default Pgh night paddle

CANCELLED DUE TO WEATHER ... Friday, June 22nd the Pittsburgh Pirates will be playing a night game, and they are scheduled to have fireworks after the game. If folks are interested, I am offering to lead a paddle out of the Millvale launch, down into the city to watch the fireworks, and then back up to Millvale. This is an easy five mile round trip. Meeting time at Millvale would be around 8:30PM. Fireworks would likely be around 10PM, if there are no extra innings. This is also, of course, weather permitting. If you're interested, reply under this thread, so I can gauge the interest. CANCELLED DUE TO WEATHER

Checking my schedule, I am interested. I work until 6pm but I could find someone to switch with me.

This sounds so cool. What would be the biggest concern or consideration?

Kris - I would love to "car pool" but may not have my car. I've got major issues and need repairs made, will keep you posted. Do you have the ability to carry 2 kayaks?? I'm without my cell phone (it died) should have a new one this weekend . . .

At this point, the biggest concern may be the weather. If it rains, they will not do the fireworks show after the game, if the game even gets played.

Aside from weather, you must have your kayak / canoe illuminated. I would suggest glow sticks (front, back, and both sides). Probably best to also have a good headlamp and whistle handy. Some of the trip back up river will be in an area that does not get illuminated by the light of the city.

I would urge everyone to wear and fasten PFDs. During our PGH float last year, we encountered a kayaker who had been flipped out of his boat by the wake of a passing pleasure boat. Most of the shoreline is vertical walls, not allowing for easy beaching for recovery should you roll.

Keep checking back for updates. I will keep an eye on the weather. If it is questionable, there are other fireworks nights on the Pirates schedule.
