Cleveland Metroparks wants you and your canoe or kayak to help beat Pittsburgh

Mark Horning - Cleveland Outdoor Recreation Examiner

Nearly ten years ago (May 19th, 2001to be exact), history was made in the Cleveland Metroparks when 776 canoes and kayaks and their occupants gathered together to break the Guinness Book of Worlds Records Canoe and Kayak Challenge.

This record stood for an astounding seven years until it was broken in Islip, New York with 1,047 boats. Most recently, this record was broken last June by none other than PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA with 1,800 boats!

Since we have always had such a warm and fuzzy feeling when it comes to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Cleveland Metroparks has decided to answer the challenge by announcing the ?2011 Guinness Book of World Records Canoe and Kayak Challenge?

On May 21st, 2011(nearly ten years to the day we last beat the record) all canoe and kayak enthusiasts are invited to participate in a world breaking event. Registration to participate is $10 per canoe or kayak and $7 per person who are additional riders in the canoe or kayak. All proceeds will benefit the Cleveland Metroparks ?Outdoor Education Summer Camp Scholarship Fund?.

Check-in and launching is from 8:30 A.M. to 11:00 A.M., with the ?Challenge? set for 11:30 A.M. Participants must bring their own canoe or kayak including life jackets and paddles. The Ohio Division of Watercraft has agreed to a one-day license waver for all participants, but all watercraft must meet safety and operation regulations. Inflatable canoes and kayaks are not allowed.

The ?Challenge? launching will be conducted from the parking lot off Bellus Road in Hinckley Reservation between Hinckley Hills/Route 606 and State Roads in Hinckley Township. The ?Challenge? will take place in Hinckley Lake, just off the shore from Hinckley Lake Boathouse.
