Default Chilly Chili Paddle 2018

Mahoning River Chilly Chili Run- Canoe City

When- Sunday December 9th

Where-Canoe City Metro Park 107 N Leavitt RD, Leavittsburg OH 44430
GPS 41.241135, -80.881393

Time-11 AM
You know it is December when it is time for the umpteenth annual Chilly Chili Run.
Last chance for all you canoeist and kayakers "nuts” to get out for one last official trip before the end of the year.
We will gather at the CANOE CITY METROPARK starting around 11am and set up the area for our chili feast and get a fire going. After setup we will head up to Swift Metro park for the 3.6-mile flat water paddle to Canoe City for the chili and other goodies.
Members are always welcome to do a up and back from Canoe City if they don't want to do the shuttle.

If it is extremely cold like last year them will do just an up and back for safety.

Hope to see a good turn out for a fun event.
We will have our fourth and final short meeting after the paddle.

Default electric? restroom?

We will have access to the building and electric?

Will there be a toilet? At a prior meeting I believe we (overwhelmingly) agreed for the club to pay for one.

I first need to say thank you to Zack Svette for passing on some information to the club.

The bridge that crosses the Mahoning River at North Leavitt & West Market St. will be shut down due to road work, from December 5th to January.
The easiest way to arrive at Canoe City is the Parkman Road Exit (State Route 422)

1-From St Rt 82 get off onto Parkman road and head east towards Warren.

2-First light you come to will be North Leavitt with a Circle K to your right and a CVS across the corner.

3-Turn Right on to North Leavitt.

4- From that light it is 1.4 miles to Canoe City. You will pass Labrae Schools on the way to Canoe City.

Second- Mahoning River Adventures will also be allowing us to use the garage like past years. :)

The metro parks is unable to get a porta john for the event. Zack gave me the information and I will call and see if we can pay them direct and have it for the one day.
We originally set aside $60 for the rental.
I will call tomorrow on my lunch(Tuesday) and get more info.

Thank you and looking forward to a great day at Canoe City
Mike Danko

There is a good chance I will not make the chilly paddle Sunday -just wanted to give a heads up since I usually bring sloppy Joes. Daughter is in labor and not sure what the next day or two has in store for me. Have a great time if I don't see you and stay warm!

Default Another fun day. Photos added.

It was a nice day for this December event. It was sunny but temp only got up to about 36 deg by 2 pm. That didn't stop (9) paddlers from breaking some ice to slide the boats in at Swift Park and at Canoe City. While folks were out paddling the rest of us stayed at Canoe City (where the food was)! Seemed like a bit smaller crowd this year. I think there were more paddlers than picnickers this year but we kept a good hot fire going. The real surprise this year was the giant beach ball that came paddling down the river. What a sight.

Photos added.

Looks like it was another great day to be on or by the river. I’m really sorry I could not make it. Thanks for posting photos, Ken.

Anything of interest coming out of the meeting?

The only real big vote was on the B&O dock. Friends of the mahoning and some other want to refurbish the dock. They will be applying for a grant and ask if we would take the lead on doing the work.
A unanimous vote was NOT TO TAKE THE LEAD. But to help if there is a work day scheduled.
Also a unanimous vote to stay clear of the political workings of the mosquito creek wetlands and the possible building of a new hospital.
We are a paddling club.

Also the idea of a river paddle clinic for the club and new members.
Would like a spot that offers some current but also some flat slow water.

That abouts it.
Mike
