Default Cuyahoga River Train

Cuyahoga River -Brecksville CVSR Trip Leader Mike Danko
When-Sunday June 24th

Where-BRECKSVILLE Train Station 13512 Station Rd., Brecksville, OH 44141

Time 12:30 pm

Boarding time should be 1:20pm

Be at the Station 30 Minutes prior to the train time posted.

TCTC will make it way west to paddle the burning river; that's right the Cuyahoga River.
This trip will have a special feature to it; We will be using the Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad for our shuttle. It is a quick shuttle on the train for 10-15 minutes then unload.
Depending on water level we may do the longer section from Peninsula back to Breckville (8.5 miles) couple of nice wave trains and class I rapids.
If the level is lower we will go from Boston Mills back to Brecksville. (6 miles) all flat and easy paddle.

The fee for the train goes-Single seat kayak $10 per boat
Two seat Kayak/Canoe $15 per boat.

I will need a head count to let the railroad know if they need to add an extra car on for our boats.
Please contact me by text or call 330-766-3129 or email

tctnewsletter@gmail.com

If you enjoy biking you can take a ride on the Ohio Erie towpath and use the train as your shuttle. They only charge $2 per bike.

After the paddle I hope some us might head down to peninsula and eat at the Winking Lizzard, or head up to Independence to Melts (Featured on Man vs Food) for dinner.

Correction ??? If the water level is lower ... u mean trip will be Boston Mills to Brecksville not Boston Mills to Penninsula ... that would be going upstream

Default K & C rsvp = yes

K & C are planning to come. Looks like a good opportunity to see a new stretch of the Cuyahoga. Doesn't look like the recent storms have had much effect on water level. Hopefully no major downpours today (Saturday).

Does the train car have sides? Do we need to tie boats down on train?

Come on along, more the merrier.

Tommorow at the station we will go over the paddle.
I have had several inquiries about doing the 6 miles instead of the 8.5 miles due to the later start to meet the train schedule.
Hoping we can take a vote and go from there
Mike

Default Review

What a great day on the crooked river (Cuyahoga).
The turn out for this trip was amazing; we had 35 Paddlers (28 Kayaks & 4 Canoes)

The train was running late so we were able to catch the North Bound ride up and then back to Boston Mills. I learned that many of the paddlers never been on a train before so it was a cool experience for all.

The staff was great helping loading and unloading the boats, and it was sight to see 32 boats stacked up in a railroad car.

Once unloaded we did have a hike to the put-in, but we all worked together to get it done. The launch is a primitive launch but still nice.

Once on the water it was a nice paddle with some tight spots and many many curves & turns. It was nice to have Jessica in the front and I stayed in back and the radio's again helped when needed.

For most of the paddle you felt so isolated from every thing except the occasional train whistle or bike passing on the bike path.

The take out was a rough one, but we have done worse.

From the take out it was another hike to get to the cars.

After the paddle several groups went to the Winking Lizard Restaurants in Peninsula and Bedford Heights.

I hope everyone had a good time, I know I really enjoyed the whole day.

Default Thanks for the trip!

Many thanks to Mike and Jessica for arranging, organizing and leading this trip. Working with the railroad and managing a group of 35 paddlers is no small effort. The long carries on both ends made it even more of a challenge, so it was great to see everyone cooperate with Mike's urging to help others get boats and gear to and from the water.

It was a beautiful day with a few interludes of pesky head winds. The USGS gage at Independence was around 3.7 during our time on the Cuyahoga, which was probably several inches above paddling zero. It was really neat to experience all those twists and turns of The Crooked River. And it appeared that everyone enjoyed the unique shuttle and time on the water. It was another great day on the river! Thanks again Mike and Jessica!
