Default Cuyahoga River, October 27, 2013

Cuyahoga River–Kent, Ohio*** to Waterworks Park in Cuyahoga Falls

[SEE CHANGE IN MEETING PLACE THREE MESSAGES BELOW IN THIS THREAD]

Please join Trumbull Canoe Trails on Sunday, October 27, on the Cuyahoga, the “Crooked River,” from Tannery Park, 300 Stow Street in Kent to Waterworks Park, 2025 Munroe Falls Avenue in Cuyahoga Falls. This 6.5 miles, flat water trip will take about 3.5 hours. Please pack something to eat for lunch along the river.

The trip will meet at Tannery Park in Kent, at 11:30 a.m. Parking here is limited. Directions from Tannery Park to Waterworks Park in Cuyahoga Falls will be provided for the shuttle. Keep in mind that we are now in cold water paddling season, so prepare accordingly.

***As we did for this trip last year, those who wish to paddle a 1.5 mile section of the river upstream of Tannery Park through downtown Kent BEFORE meeting paddlers who will start at Tannery Park, meet at 10:00 a.m. at River Bend Park (41.168789, -81.348057), a small access area on River Bend Boulevard, about one-quarter mile east of Ohio Route 43.

At lower water levels, this section has about a mile of class 1-2 rapids through a very interesting narrow gorge that includes the historic dam that once spanned the river in downtown Kent. Paddlers who want to run this section should have good boat control in a moderate current. At higher levels, the rapids turn to class 2-3. We will NOT run this 1.5 mile section if the flow exceeds 750 cfs on the Old Portage U.S. Geological Survey gage. Meet instead at the Tannery Park put-in at 11:30. Watch the club website if there is any question whether we will run this section. Keep in mind that we are now in cold water paddling season, so prepare accordingly.

Please call or email JP Tolson at 330-337-7752 or john.paul.tolson@gmail.com by Saturday, October 26, if you plan to attend.

Default Slight Change in Plans

TCT,
Due to bridge construction across the Cuyahoga immediately downriver from Tannery Park, we are changing the meeting place/put in FOR THOSE PADDLING THE FLATWATER SECTION ONLY. Instead of meeting at Tannery Park, meet at 11:30 a.m. near shelter #5 in Fred Fuller Park, 601 Middlebury Road in Kent. This park is just downriver of Tannery Park and the bridge construction. Middlebury Road is off Ohio Route 59. This will eliminate the need for those doing the flatwater section only to get out of their boats no sooner than getting in them to carry around the bridge construction.

Those meeting at River Bend Blvd at 10:00 a.m. to paddle the whitewater section through Kent will have to carry their boats around the bridge construction, most likely on river right. This will be a moderate distance, but the footing should not be too difficult.

Air temperatures for Sunday are forecast to be in the high 40s. Those who stay behind with the boats at the put in while we run the shuttle will need to dress accordingly (or we may leave a car at the put in so those staying with the boats can wait in the car).

Please let me know by Saturday, Oct 26th, if you will be coming. Thanks.

Default Cuyahoga Trip Report

Six TCT paddlers enjoyed a cool, but beautiful, day on the Cuyahoga. Five of us–Mike and Jess, Bruce and Dianne, and I–met at the River Bend access for the whitewater section through Kent and set off around 11:00. The river was running around 270 cfs/3.1 on the Old Portage gage, about twice the volume and a good six inches above last year's club run. So we had a decent amount of water and are glad to report of no carnage.

As we reached Tannery Park, we were happy to see Ron E. waiting for us.
In a couple hundred yards, we pulled over on river right to carry around the bridge construction downstream of Tannery. Bruce and Dianne brought their nifty canoe wheels which made the carry a lot easier for some of us, especially since we had a flat surface to roll it over for most of the distance around the bridge.

Once back on the water, Dianne was quick to point out (uhhh...ahemmm and drumroll, Bob K), that this trip had MORE CANOES than kayaks!@ We enjoyed a decent current the rest of the way with a lunch stop on a sunny spot about a mile upriver from Brust Park. The headwind in the open stretch above Brust did not reach bothersome levels. Likely as a result of the dam removals in Cuyahoga Falls last summer, the river through Waterworks Park is now lower and the current is faster.

We did spot a number of deer, Jess saw two red tail? hawks perched in the same tree, and everyone enjoyed some really beautiful fall colors.

After the trip, all of us stopped at Pufferbelly's, located in an old train depot in downtown Kent, to swap paddling lies, learn about Bruce's ties to Deep Purple, find out that Ron was a rock star in a previous life, relive the day's paddle, and to get a bite to eat. All in all it was a beautiful day to be on the river. Thanks to everyone who came.
