Default Presque Isle

Presque Isle -Paddle through the Lagoons Trip Leader Mike Danko

When-Sunday June 25th

Where- Presque Isle Canoe & Boat Livery Thompson Dr. Erie PA 16507 (no Street number given) Just North of Perry Monument
http://www.presqueisle.org/about/interactive-map/

GPS 42.160145, -80.092733

Time 11am No shuttle

This is truly a TCT classic that we haven't done in a long time (2012) and it is time to revisit Presque Isle.

We will meet at the Canoe & Boat Livery, from there we will launch into the Lagoon. We will paddle through the lagoon and come out by the Main Marina Fuel Station where we will stop for lunch.
At this point we usually break up into two groups; Group 1 head back through the lagoon to the put in/take out.
Group 2 adventures into the main bay and around Perry Monument and into Misery Bay back into the lagoons and meet at the put in/take out

This is a great trip if you like to ride bikes, swim at one of the beaches or take a nice hike after the paddle. Also Erie has a casino and Waldamer Park & Water world.
After the paddle I will be stopping at Joe Roots Grill on Peninsula dr. (we pass it on the way in and out of Presque Isle)

This past couple of years I have gotten to know Greg Kehn who lives in Lilly Dale New York. He has been to several club events but I still have never seen him in a boat. Starting to wonder if he really paddles?? Will he prove me wrong?? This is the second closes trip I know of two him. The other is Buckaloons in Warren PA.

Hope for a great turn out for a classic trip.

Mike Danko

Default Ken and Cheryl rsvp Yes

Ken and Cheryl are planning to come. We've paddled the lagoons a couple of times out to the park and back. Depending on the conditions in the bay, I have no problem going back through the lagoons where it's calm. For anyone not familiar with Presque Isle it's a really different environment to paddle. As I recall it's an easy paddle of about 6 miles round trip.

Ken

per my notes:
put-in to park thru lagoons = 2.4 to 2.7 miles (exploring adds a bit more)
park to put-in via bay = 1.9 miles (possible waves, chop, swells, wind)

Red face

A really nice turn out for a paddle that was a little tougher than I thought it would be.
18 total showed up, 15 kayaks and 2 canoe.
We made from the put in through the lagoons but due to high water we couldn't go under the bridge to lunch area.
In route to the bridge we fought a hard strong head wind that kicked my butt in the canoe.,
On the way back Ken's meter read at least 15 miles per hour wind guess and the water level was rising. With the winds we had whitecaps were forming in the lagoon. The bay was easily 2-4 ft. waves or more
The water level rose at lease 9 inches at the put in from when we started to the end of our journey.
After many decided they had enough when we got back to the launch we all helped loading each other stuff up.
Mary K, Kate, Kerry, & Myself went back out in to Misery bay. Ken and Cheryl joined us to the mouth of Misery Bay.

the four of us made it to Perry's monument, but I had to fight like crazy to get back the bridge where it goes back into the lagoons.

Over all a good trip, nice weather with a little thunder & a sprinkle or two. Lots of clear to partly sunny skies and some crazy, I mean crazy winds.

Mike

Default A few photos posted (and a Lake Erie primer)

Thanks to Dustin the photo albums are working again.

Boy, was this ever a windy paddle. I was a bit mystified that when we got to the bridge close to Marina Bay that there was so little clearance underneath that Mike elected to stop there (and not scrape off his hat). Just as well as I think it got even more windy on the way back but at least it was pushing along.

I was more surprised when we got back to the launch. The spot were we launched had a 6" step down to the water. Coming back in it was 3" under water. And if you looked you could see water slowly coming up through the grass. The whole low-lying park area was filling with water.

I have little Lake Erie knowledge but I did know that wind can push the water to the shore. I had no idea how much! Of course Lake Erie is the worst because it is so shallow.

Wind will push water to one of the lake (set-up) and lower it on the other (set-down). When the wind stops there is an effect called a "seiche" (SAYSH) when the water sloushes back and forth in the lake until it settles back down. Could be 12 hours for one sloush. This can be dramatic. On 11-14-2003 the lake raised 5 ft in Buffalo NY and dropped 7 ft in Toledo, Oh.

Ref: google "seiches on the Great Lake" and select the same.
