Default Pine Barrens Functional FreeStyle Workshop

The 2015 Pine Barrens Functional FreeStyle Workshop is a new event for the freestyle canoe community, being conducted October 16-18 2015 in Medford Lakes, NJ, in the heart of the Pine Barrens. Many people are perhaps familiar with the Interpretive side of Freestyle Canoeing from YouTube videos and the like, which feature folks gracefully paddling canoe ?routines? to music, much like figure skating. To be sure, this is one aspect of FreeStyle which some folks like to pursue, but FS is first and foremost a body of technique which teaches you the art of precision boat control, to ?feel? the canoe and your paddle, how to ?talk to? and listen to your canoe, in short ? how to become a better partner with your canoe, and simply enjoy every paddling experience that much more.
As the name perhaps implies, the focus of this workshop is to demonstrate and teach what we call the ?functional/practical? side of Freestyle Canoeing maneuvers, strokes and techniques. You will be introduced to a new skill set, or will be able to expand your existing skills, helping you to safely and efficiently explore the countless small streams that crisscross the countryside. Freestyle techniques are fun to practice on a quiet pond, and even more fun and useful when applied to paddling on intimate streams. Learn how to enhance boat control and increase paddling efficiency on small, narrow, twisting, waterways and not incidentally, look really good doing it. You?ll learn to love your canoe. Both solo and tandem are welcome. And if you have never paddled the unique and intimate streams of the Pine Barrens, you have a treat in store?Go to freestylecanoeing.com, and click on "Pine Barrens Functional FreeStyle Workshop" for details and registration materials. And there?s also a brief video clip there on the home page featuring a few folks applying their technique on the upper Batsto River ? the very stuff, and the very stream, you will be exposed to at the Workshop.
