Final

Approved by voice vote of club members present at meeting conducted on January 20, 2013

Call to Order

President Mike Danko called the fourth and final club meeting of 2012 to order on December 2nd at 11:15 a.m. at Canoe City MetroPark in Leavittsburg, Ohio. Approximately 40 members and guests attended during the club?s annual chili chilly run, brightening an otherwise gloomy day of leaden skies and intermittent rain, but above average temperatures.

Secretary?s Minutes

Club secretary John Paul Tolson read three pages of minutes from the previous club meeting, which was held on July 8, 2012. The members present voted to approve the minutes as read.

Treasurer?s Report

Club treasurer Patty Allen reported the income, expenses, and balance for the club checking and saving accounts. Contact Patty Allen for information on specific dollar amounts of income, expenses, and account balances.

Patty reported that forms were submitted to the U.S. Internal Revenue Service during August to re-instate the club?s tax-exempt status. She received a letter from the IRS stating that the application was received and that it will take months to process.

Bruce Ambrose moved to accept the treasurer?s report; Paul Isaac seconded the motion. The club members present voted to accept the motion.

Old Business

No items of old business were discussed.

New Business

1. Mahoning River Water Trail
Mike Danko introduced Mr. Frank Fuda, a Trumbull County Commissioner from Niles, Ohio, and Mr. Zack Svette, staff of Trumbull County Metroparks. Commissioner Fuda expressed his appreciation to the club for its work in support of the county?s successful effort to earn designation of the Mahoning River in Trumbull County as a state water trail. Mike suggested that the club might want to make a donation to further enhance the county?s work on the water trail. He will consult with club members and address the idea at the next club meeting.

2. Friends of the Mahoning River
Mike Danko, club president, has been attending meetings of the Friends of the Mahoning River and would like more club members to attend. Mary Kane suggested that meeting dates be included in the club?s newsletter. The next meeting is in January.

Friends as well as the city of Lowellville and the Ohio EPA will be petitioning Ohio Edison to remove the river-wide debris jam that accumulates beneath a bridge that is owned by the company. Once a contact at Ohio Edison is identified, club members will be encouraged to write to the company to request that it eliminate this hazard to recreational users of the river. Also, the city of Lowellville has applied to the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency for a grant to remove the Lowellville dam.

Mahoning County would like the lower Mahoning River also to be designated as a state water trail. This spawned some discussion on the merits of different organizations and political jurisdictions collaborating for common purposes and shared interests. Steve Preston suggested that joining in with groups like Friends of the Mahoning is advantageous, especially with grant applications. It demonstrates to those evaluating the applications that groups are working together.

3. Procrastinator?s Christmas Party
The party is scheduled for January 20, 2013, but the site has not yet been determined. Mike Danko wants to keep the venue centrally located to the club membership. The head of the Friends of the Mahoning group, who is also an employee of the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency, will be the guest speaker.

4. Leesville Lake
Club member Ron Eels suggested a possible nine-mile cross-lake run on Leesville Lake for a future club trip. Other members recommended that this be raised at the club?s planning meeting in February.

Adjournment

At approximately 11:40 a.m. Bruce Ambrose moved that the meeting be adjourned. Ed Rigby seconded the motion and members present approved the motion.
