We are very lucky to have Ron Eells in the club. You may recognize him as the paddler in the blue whitewater kayak and gold helmet. Ron is a retired instructor from River Sport at Ohiopyle. He has an unlimited wealth of knowledge in Whitewater Kayaking, Canoeing, & Flat Water paddling. With those skills he knows many different type of paddling strokes for all types of water.
On this day Ron is willing to go over the basic strokes that every paddler should know and how to use them. We will also be flipping boats to get a sense of what it feels like to flip and how to recover.
This is the perfect time to ask Ron any questions on any strokes and style of paddling. I have really learned a lot from Ron in the past five or so years, and he has always been willing to talk to you, show you and help you learn how to be a better paddler.
I hope to see a good turn out as we all can learn something new or even freshen up on old information that might just keep us out of trouble.
Mike

Default K & C rsvp= yes

We are planning to come. Might be hot. Sounds like a good time to play in the river. Cheryl is hoping for some instruction on eddy turns. I want a refresher on what to do/not do when getting swept into a sweeper or partially submerged log. KenM

Paddle Clinic-Sprucevale (Beaver Creek State Park)

Another really warm day made for a great time to be in the water. A BIG THANK YOU goes to Ron Eells for leading this clinic. We had 11 members and one k9 attend. Ron covered Forward strokes, sweep strokes, braces, draw stroke, cross bow draw strokes and a couple of others. For many of us it was amazing to see how many bad habits we have as paddlers. Also how hard some of the more advance strokes can be. I know I keep missing the brace in my cross bow draw and went swimming because of it. (I blame the kayak: Should have been in my Canoe :)
Afterwards, Mark, Stan, Ken and myself were playing around and trying out different boats and swimming around. A big Congrads goes to Tom & Darla as this was there first time experience what it is like to flip a kayak, and to see there life vest work. Great Job!!!
Thank you again Ron. I know I have more work to do.
Mike

Default Thanks Ron... That was fun.

Thanks Ron. I'm going to have to practice a bit on getting into an eddy. I've been doing some version of a REAR sweep when crossing the eddy line instead of a forward sweep to help pivot the boat.

Hummm...Now, was that... paddle paddle. lean and brace with power face. followed by a forward sweep ?

I think my version was paddle, paddle. lean too far and brace, fill boat with water, start swimming.
